ABOUT IZABELA
Izabela (PhD) is a Suminagashi artist based in Melbourne/Naarm, Australia, whose psychology background enhances her capacity to form projective images for the viewer. In keeping with the Zen Buddhist origins of this medium which include low environmental footprint, she remains committed to using traditional calligraphy brushes, handmade washi papers, natural surfactants and non-toxic ink made from soot.

Izabela's exploration of Suminagashi outside the Japanese culture has been solitary, as there are no traditional master teachers of this art in Australia and little has been written about it in Western literature. Drawing on her research experience, she has created a methodology around sourcing of nature-based materials which includes bringing Suminagashi outdoors to fresh- and salt-water environments where the elements co-create the patterns.

Izabela is drawn to the simplicity, fluidity, and paradoxical nature of this medium. Her aim is to evoke sensory impressions that engage viewers' emotions and imaginations. Izabela has participated in curated exhibitions, and her work is in small local and international private collections .
