ABOUT IZABELA

Izabela (PhD) is a Suminagashi artist based in Melbourne/Naarm, Australia, who is drawn to the simplicity, fluidity, and paradoxical nature of this centuries-old medium. Her psychology background enhances Izabela's capacity to form projective images; she aims to evoke sensory impressions that engage viewers' emotions, imaginations, and invite reflection.

Izabela's exploration of Suminagashi outside the Japanese culture has been solitary, as there are no traditional master teachers of this art in Australia and little has been written about it in Western literature. Drawing on her research experience, she has created unique methodologies which include bringing Suminagashi outdoors to fresh- and salt-water environments where the elements co-create the patterns, sometimes contributing colour as well. She is committed to her art leaving low environmental footprint, and uses traditional calligraphy brushes, handmade washi papers, natural surfactants and non-toxic ink made from soot.

Izabela has participated in curated exhibitions, and her work is in small local and international private collections .

In 2025, Izabela curated an exhibition "Suminagashi: A Journey Through Time and Space" at the Consulate General of Japan, in Melbourne, which was also a debut solo show of her works.
